Another Wednesday in the 03, so today I decided to head over to Lyttelton once more to see what I could see. This is from down near the marina, looking back towards the port and the heads. I used a 10 stop filter to slow this down to a 12″ exposure, allowing me to smooth out the waves on the sea. Thanks to everyone who commented on yesterday’s 1460th blip. Your support & kind words are always something of a boost. I apologise that I don’t reciprocate as much as I should when it comes to comments, but I […]

Another gorgeous morning in the shadow of the mountain, the perfect way to start an anniversary of posts on Blipfoto. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way and for the great photographers and personalities I’ve met on my journey. You know who you are 😉

Shot on my way home from appointments in G-Town today. These young girls were very interested in my presence and I’m only about 6 inches from #388’s nose here with my wide angle lens, but she remained very calm and inquisitive. I used a ND0.6 filter on my Fuji 16mm f/1.4 lens to help me control the light a little. I love this focal length – I’m a great believe in “go wide and get close!” In the extra shot you’ll see me at the other extreme – shooting with my XF100-400mm lens, this time at 100mm to compress […]

Backblipping from Sunday (catching up with what was on the memory card) when I took Jack for a walk up to the top of the property. I love the view towards the mountain from here, framed nicely by these tall eucalyptus trees.

Mrs H striding with purpose… We had a lovely picnic lunch at the Te Araroa trail head today, a belated lunch to celebrate our Anniversary last Monday. Bad weather forced us to take a raincheck, so this was the perfect way the celebrate 18 very happy years 🙂

Unfortunately we had to cancel our astrophotographers outing with Focus Timaru this evening due to bad weather. Ironically after a foul day weatherwise, late tonight the skies have cleared, so a few moments ago I stepped out onto the balcony in my PJs to take this photo of the stars over the mountain. There’s a bit of fresh snow up there… The bright star to the left of the peak is Arcturus – fourth brightest star in the night sky and brightest in the Northern Hemisphere. This view is looking north, and the star is low in the sky […]

I took the Inland Scenic Route on my way home from Christchurch today, stopping by Staveley for refreshments, which I enjoyed at the start of the Mt Somers Track. After viewing the cascading water from the bridge shown, I walked down to the picnic area and then down to the stream bed to get this shot. I had to balance my tripod on the huge foreground boulder, and I’m really glad I put my waterproof boots on when I left the house this morning! This was shot with a Fuji 16mm f/1.4 prime, which I’ve currently got on loan […]

Milky Way over the edge of the bush at Peel Forest. Here’s hoping these starry skies continue through to Friday for our Focus Timaru Astro meet up….
Continue readingMore TagKereru in the Kowhai
One of our resident New Zealand wood pigeons took up residence in the kowhai just outside my study today, spending quite a bit of the afternoon browsing on the fresh leaves. It’s great to be able to capture all of their beautiful colours from such a close distance. I also liked how he seemed to have his fluffy trousers on for winter!

After last night’s sunset we were greeted with another display of colour this morning. I’d decided as soon as I woke to head out to capture the sunrise, so I headed down towards Arundel to get this view of the first light hitting the peaks of Mt Peel (with the snow on the left) and Little Mount Peel. On the right you’ll see the snow on the distant Mt Taylor. Another vintage lens shot today, this time a Soligor 28mm f/2.8 at f/11. I used a ND0.3 Grad and ND0.3 Filter, together with the polariser, to lengthen the exposure […]
