Blandswood Stream, Peel Forest

I’ve been at my desk in the study for much of the day, prepping for work in Christchurch over the next couple of days. Just before dark, I walked round the corner to see my neighbour and to drop off dinner for him, which Mrs H cooked this afternoon. He’s been unwell with the ‘flu for the last week, so we’re keeping an eye on him. He does so much for the local community, so it only seems right to pay him back with some TLC. Get well soon buddy!

A Day for Slideshows

I’ve been working on presentations for much of the day (I’m in Christchurch later this week for work, and will be presenting to clients) so I guess this is a fitting way to get your blip to match your day. This Viewmaster is from Mount St Helens, purchased as a gift by my brother-in-law for me and Mrs H when he visited there some years ago. It’s a nostalgic way to look back on an event that I remember from my childhood, although I was only seven at the time (May 1980).  However I was an inquisitive kid, with […]

Last Light on the Rangitata

With a Nor’Wester blowing up on the top of the Waikari Hills, by the time I dropped down onto the braided plains of the Rangitata Valley this evening,  I had escaped the winds and just bathed in the near silence. Whilst the river is a powerful beast, it purrs like a pussy cat here upstream of the gorge; its power is most felt further down stream as it it siphoned off for irrigation, its white-waters rafted, and its rapids fished for salmon. In short, it’s a river of contrasts. But one thing is for sure – it is at […]

Out of the Forest

Jack and I went for a quick walk as the light was fading, so we elected to walk along the dry creek bed of the Kowhai Stream, downstream from Little Mount Peel, seen here with a topping of cloud. The day’s flown by again, I guess it’s good to be busy eh? Tomorrow sees me and Mrs H heading off to Timaru for a Focus Aorangi car rally. Should be fun. Hopefully I’ll grab a blip along the way…

Lunch at the Stables

Unlike these residents, guests at the Stables & Bar just outside Timaru don’t have their choices limited to hay and other stockfeed 🙂 We headed into Timaru today to meet our friends, N & L, from Christchurch for lunch. They were down on their shiny new Can-Am Spyder (DROOOOOOL!!!) so we decided a place out of town that offered good food as well as a chance for us all to see the gorgeous farmyard animals that surround the Cafe. As we left after a stonkingly good lunch, we stopped to say hi to the chickens, kune kune pigs and […]

“Wildfire”

It’s been a busy day behind the camera for me, mostly taking architectural photos for clients, one a real estate agent, the other a local accommodation provider who I’m also doing some website work for. In between wide angle lenses and remote flash triggers, I stopped by to say hello to this lovely Clydesdale stallion, who is often to be seen grazing the roadside strip just down the lane from here. I’ve called this blip ’Wildfire’ after the Michael Murphy song of the same name, which is based on a north american indian legend about a boy and a […]

Moonlight on the Boatsheds, Paradise Bay

I’ve been in the Garden City again today, both for business and for photography related matters. It’s been a good day. This evening at the Diamond Harbour Camera Club we had an inspirational talk from local photographer Scott Fowler, who shared some of his insights and displayed some of his work. It certainly was useful; it’s given me some ideas of how I can work with some of my images from a conceptual point of view, as well as providing me with some tips from getting the most out of local adjustments in the Nik suite of software. Following […]

MonoMonday #77 – (A Taste of) Summer…

Tricky challenge this week for MonoMonday – we’re stuck in the middle of Winter (we had snow on the ground until it melted this afternoon) so grabbing a summer pic is a little bit difficult to say the least. Still, what screams summer to me is Ice Cream. After all, you scream, I scream, we all scream for Ice Cream – right? Well it was worth a try. Just like this Tip Top Boysenberry Ripple. Enjoy ‘summer’, wherever you are….

Golden Light Up Country at Boundary Stream

It’s been a lazy day for me and she today, just like Sundays should be. After a late night shooting at the ball, I was pleased to have a bit of a slow start. A quick trot with the dogs in the snow – we only had a couple of centimetres, so just enough to coat some of the bush with a layer of white – and then it was time to head into Ashburton to grab some stuff from the hardware store and supermarket, as well as the garden centre. All very middle aged. We topped off our […]
