I love exploring our local area, so today we headed inland for a bit of a recce. I’m in the process of prepping for a photo calendar so I’m doing a bit of location scouting for the final shots. I’m one of those people who enjoys planning to take photos as much as taking them, so today’s journey was a bit of a trip into the unknown as I’ve never ventured up this ‘road’ before. Needless to say it’s another one of those tracks that makes you glad you have four wheel drive and plenty of clearance – there […]

My Unofficial Office
Geraldine is buzzing at the moment; Ukefest is on so there are lots of visitors with ukuleles at the ready and with the school just started there are a lot of people passing through. I’d been a the Duck for a few hours for meetings, so it made sense when me and Mrs H were in Geraldine last night to take some long exposures of my favourite cafe (with the passing traffic) before heading in for an awesome burger and craft beer. Plus its always great to catch up with the proprietors Anna and Al, who came and had […]

Another beautiful afternoon after a cold, frosty morning. I love this time of year, the quality of light is just amazing. Thought I’d give some contre-jour photography a go by way of a change – find out more here.

Late this afternoon Jack and I walked down the driveway, both of us needing a leg stretched after being cooped up for the last couple of days. Jack was full of beans, picking up lots of stray sticks that had blown off the trees and generally inviting me to throw them for him. As you can see, it was pretty cold – the hail we had on Monday night has still not thawed in the shady areas on the hill. I think it’s going to be a cold clear night tonight too.

This sort of shot is the reason why I keep my camera and long lens on my desk when I’m working. Living surrounded by trees there’s always plenty of birds around, so when I saw this little silvereye (Zosterops lateralis) resting on the hebe outside my study window I grabbed the camera and rattle off a few shots. There was also a grey warbler bobbling around, but she was moving a little bit too quickly to capture. Next time!

Wow, winter in the Canterbury High Country – it just doesn’t get much prettier. This is the view from above the Forest Creek yards, looking towards Mesopotamia, Mt Sinclair and Cloudy Peak. Check out a drone flyover up on the Bush Stream track.

Two basket fungi (Ileodictyon cibarium) have popped up on the path down to the house – what weird little things they are too. The foreground one is about the size of my palm, the one at the back a little smaller.

Another beautiful morning, but we could see the frost glistening on the paddocks in the distance. No sign of Banks Peninsula on the horizon today, I’m guessing there must have been fog on the other side of the Rakaia.

Another Wednesday in the 03, so today I decided to head over to Lyttelton once more to see what I could see. This is from down near the marina, looking back towards the port and the heads. I used a 10 stop filter to slow this down to a 12″ exposure, allowing me to smooth out the waves on the sea. Thanks to everyone who commented on yesterday’s 1460th blip. Your support & kind words are always something of a boost. I apologise that I don’t reciprocate as much as I should when it comes to comments, but I […]
